10 Oct Germany: a study on the economics of music streaming
GEMA – a collecting society – commissioned the consultancy Goldmedia to study music streaming in Germany.
It found that 45 per cent of the German population uses music streaming services, and around two-thirds have paid subscriptions. Spotify is used by 28% of the German people (over 14), ahead of Amazon Music (14%), Apple Music and SoundCloud (both 6 %); YouTube’s free service tops them with 58%. A 2 billion euro streaming market is expected in Germany by the end of 2022. Out of 4,278 members, GEMA found that 89% of music creators consider their remuneration from streaming to be ‘inadequate’. The average value of 1,000 music streams in Germany peaked at EUR 10.58 in 2016 and has fallen to EUR 8.12.
Spotify’s subscription price remained unchanged, while Netflix’s Premium price rose from €11.99 per month in 2015 to €17.99 in 2022 and Standard’s from €9.99 to €12.99. Half of GEMA members strongly agree that streaming services retain too high a share of revenues compared to rights holders: Creators call for more transparency from OTT.
